The USA Program Winter Camp 2014 package is hosted this year from Jan 4th through Feb 11th , 2015 in San Francisco, CA. Our host for the institute portion of the program this summer is San Francisco Christian School.
San Francisco Christian School
In 1971, Mr. Jack McBirney returned to San Francisco after serving as a missionary to Newfoundland, Canada. His children had to attend a public school and because of obstacles they met, he was burdened for the lack of Christian education in the city of San Francisco. With a vision to see, a faith to believe, and courage to do, he founded San Francisco Christian School. It has been a means of reaching many nationalities with the Word of God, and of presenting them with Jesus Christ and His love for them.
San Francisco Christian first opened its doors in September, 1971. The Board realized the need for this school, prayed for 90 students, and on the first day of school 90 students were enrolled! The school began with grades K - 10 on Dorland Street at the educational building of First Covenant Church. The Jr-Sr High School was moved into the facilities of Calvary Baptist Church in the fall of 1972 when the 11th and 12th grades were added. The first graduating class of San Francisco Christian School was the class of 1973.
Attendance continued to increase each year thereafter. This increase necessitated the construction of our school building on Whittier Street in 1976, which was used by the Jr-Sr High School. The school continued to grow, and in 1982, the Jr-Sr High School moved to the Serramonte Del Rey campus, and the elementary school moved to the Whittier Street building. In the mid-1980’s San Francisco Christian School tried to establish two different extension campuses for primary grades, one at Sunset Baptist Church and one at the Serramonte Del Rey campus. Both campuses were closed within a couple of years due to lack of enrollment.
In 1984, San Francisco Christian School was incorporated into the ministry of Calvary Baptist Church. In the fall of 1989, the high school was moved to the facilities of the Calvary Baptist Church due to a reduction in enrollment and financial debt. Within a couple of years, the school regained financial stability and began to operate in the black. Enrollment stabilized at approximately 260 students.
Calvary Baptist Church has a heart for missions and world evangelism. One of the ways the ministry is reaching to the uttermost parts of the world is through the enrollment of “non-immigrant foreign students.” In the fall of 1996, San Francisco Christian School was approved by the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service to issue “I-20” forms for foreign students to attend school. As we reach and train these students for Jesus Christ, they can return to their home countries and families with the Gospel.
With a vision for future growth, the school leased a small piece of property across Mission Street from the school. Four modular classroom units were leased and installed on the property. The expansion facilities were occupied in April, 1998.
Since Pastor Ron Allen’s arrival in San Francisco in June, 1980, he has taken an active role in the ministry of the school. He has spent much time preaching, teaching, and counseling and has held a position on the school board and has been the administrator and superintendent.
We have much for which to praise the Lord. Some of our graduates are in full-time Christian service. Many are preparing for service in Christian colleges, and we have an enthusiastic and capable student body with great potential. We thank God for the many teachers, administrators, and parents whom the Lord has used to make this ministry possible. Many graduates are involved in secular employment and serving the Lord in local church ministries.

The USA Program Winter Camp 2014 was designed to give to all of our international students opportunities to excel and succeed in the areas of Personal Development, Communication Skills, and Cultural Understanding. Each of these areas are described below:
Personal Development
All students in the USA Program Winter Camp 2014 will be faced with numerous opportunities for personal development. They will be immersed into a culture and lifestyle, which is different from that to which they are accustomed without the support system on which they have relied in the past. Students will mature in their decision-making and problem-solving skills, become more self-reliant and self-motivated, and improve in their social interaction skills.
Communication Skills
One of the primary goals of USA Program’s Winter Camp 2014 is for our intl. students to improve their proficiency in the English language. Being exposed to the English language on a twenty-four hour daily basis, both in the classroom and the travel and tour activities, students will more readily learn and comprehend the language and self expression. They will be provided ample opportunities to share and exchange information with others through communication
The very nature of USA Program Winter Camp 2014 is to bring individuals from different backgrounds together for the purpose of promoting cultural and historical understanding and academic development. By taking part in our Winter Camp 2014 Program, intl. students will gain a new perspective on viewing customs that differ from their own. Through daily observation of and participation in the American lifestyle and culture, USA Program’s international students will come to a deeper, more conclusive understanding of what their own cultural norms, accepted ways of life, and customs are. This knowledge will better enable them to accept and appreciate different ways of life throughout the world.
USA Program has created a unique and exciting method of instruction called BEST TIME ® to help insure that each intl. student maximizes his understanding and learning of the English language and the American culture for the duration of the Summer Study/Travel Program. As the name indicates, the goal of USA Program is to give to each intl. student an experience that will rank as one of the “best times” of his life. The “BEST” portion of the BEST TIME ® methodology consists of daily classroom theory instruction, while the “TIME” portion consists of daily activities and tours.
Each portion of BEST TIME® is explained in detail as follows:
“B.E.S.T.” = Basic English Structure Tutorials
“BEST” is the daily classroom theory instruction. Each day for the duration of the USA Program Winter Camp 2014 Study/Travel, many hours will be dedicated to learning and improving English. Each participant will receive a textbook and a workbook which will be used during each class. A qualified teaching staff will provide the participants with an innovative and invigorating educational experience.
In the Winter Camp 2014 Program, intl. students will experience intensive learning through four types of English courses plus Math and History:
1. English and ESL – English as a Second Language
The primary concentration of the ESL course is to improve communication skills, grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills. A variety of topics are covered that provide opportunities to practice these important English language skills on a daily basis.
Some of the grammar topics of study include:
√ possessive adjectives
√ plurals
√ present continuous
√ present tense
√ questions and short answers
√ regular and irregular verbs
√ time expressions

√ past tense
In addition to ESL classes, USA Program will provide the intl. students with a study course of the following:

3. American History, Civics, Citizenship, and Government
What is it about the American culture which makes them stand out in the world? Americans represent less than 6% of the world’s population, but often seem to make 100% of the noise. America is a fairly young society as nations go, but the impact on other countries and cultures of the world is enormous.
In large part, Americans are problem solvers and solution finders. Americans are always looking forward to progress, development, and how we can make things easier and more efficient. Americans focus on individuality, personal achievement, and freedom. USA program utilizes various resources to teach the intl. students the importance of civics and citizenship in the U.S.
America was formed by many individuals who left their homelands to escape certain types of governments, social structures, and religious persecution. Hands-on and classroom learning will give students an in-depth look into America’s rich history and governing processes.
Cultural Understanding
·“T.I.M.E.” = Tourism Involvement Means Experience
“TIME” is the practical experience via activities and tours. The intl. students will be taken to exciting places around heart of American history, education, and culture. The intl. students will have the opportunity to put into practice the classroom lessons that they’ve learned. The intl. students will participate in cross-cultural activities and tours of the American community to learn about America’s rich history. American tour guides will accompany the students on all tours and travel excursions.
